GHA's 17 public housing communities offer a variety of
housing options. Older communities such as Smith Homes, Hampton Homes, Ray Warren Homes and Claremont Courts are large communities with
more than 200 units. Each of these communities has a Police Neighborhood
Resource Center that provides community policing and other services.
Since the early 1970s, GHA has
built smaller developments on scattered sites throughout Greensboro. These
communities have about 50 units each and are designed to fit into the
surrounding neighborhoods.

Section 8 helps low-income families pay their rent in
privately-owned rental housing. As in public housing. families pay at least 30%
of their monthly adjusted income toward the rent. Family incomes are adjusted by
deducting child care and some other household expenses. The Section 8
program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
and administered by the Greensboro Housing Authority.

The purpose of the program is to promote family unification by providing
housing assistance to families for whom the lack of adequate housing is a
primary factor in the separation, or the threat of imminent separation, of
children from their families.

Section 8 rental assistance is provided along with supportive services to enable
very low-income households consisting of adults with disabilities to rent
affordable private housing of their choice. These persons also receive
assistance in locating suitable accessible housing on the private market.
Greensboro Housing Authority accepts referrals from The Advocacy Project for
this program.
